A Fun Way To Slice Bananas

Every time Jim gets back from a race, he always says, "You've gotta get Rhonda to explain to you how to slice bananas. She does it in such a way that it's easy to snack on a single banana over time -- without it turning brown."

So, at the races this weekend, (yes, I actually went with Jim for once!) I asked Rhonda to show me.

Here's how it's done...

How To Slice Bananas

This is probably common sense to some people, but I've never seen it done like this before.

I think it's ingenious.

1. Take a whole banana in the skin and slice it long ways from tip to tip. But here's the important part: Only slice deep enough to cut through the thick banana peel on top -- not all the way through the banana itself or the skin underneath.

2. Then, cut off the two end tips of the banana -- this time all the way through the top layer of skin, the banana itself, and the skin underneath too.

3. Finally, slice all the way through the banana and skin in tiny bite-sized pieces. Then, one by one, remove the peel and eat.

Like this:

Pretty cool, huh?

I thought that the two ends of each slice would turn brown in no time since they're obviously exposed to the air. But they don't really.

As you can see in the pictures, they do begin to brown around the edges, but not entirely. And the middle and sides of the banana remain firm and white.

See how to pre-slice a banana -- from the inside!

Agreed. I probably should have added that the lady who slices bananas like this does it for an entire race team -- guys who like to munch on fresh fruit throughout the day while they're working on the car.

For me... I think slicing bananas this way would be good when you have company. Or when you just want to set out a bunch of bite-sized pieces of fruit to munch on over a long period of time.

Too much time. I could eat the whole banana in the time it takes to make the first slice. smiles
